The department of Materials Science and new technologies (by 1999, the Department of Metal Physics) was founded in 1995. The Head of the department is laureate of State Prize of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Bogdan K. Ostafiychuk.

There is Research Laboratory of Physics of magnetic films of NAS of Ukraine and MES of Ukraine (supervisor prof. Ostafiychuk B.K) at the department. It was founded in 1982 and has the status of "national heritage".

5 doctors and 8 candidates of physical and mathematical sciences work at the department at all.

Students take part in 5 students' scientific problem groups and 3 scientific seminars, in which future post-graduate students educate. 11 post-graduate students and 3 PhD student, graduated students of the department, study at the department at present time

The department provides educational and professional programs in areas of "Nanomaterials"  for specialty "Physics" and "New Materials of Electronic Technology" for specialty "Applied Physics"

Graduates get qualification on three levels:

• Bachelor

• Specialist

• Master

Form of study –full-time

There are full-time Higher Doctorate and Graduate School (4 years) in areas:

105 – "Applied Physic and Nanomaterials"

104 – "Physic and Astronomy"

171 – "Electronics"

The specialized academic council D. 20.051.06 on defense of dissertations for the degrees of doctor and PhD of physical and mathematical sciences,on specialty 01.04.01 "Physics of devices, components and systems" functions there.

Department`s contacts with other educational establishments.

During its activity, the department of Materials Science and New Technologies cooperates with other educational establishments of the town and the country in one form or another.

The cooperation of the Department with NAS of Ukraine is realized through the scientific laboratory of "Physics of magnetic films", which is common with the Institute for Metal Physics of NAS of Ukraine and in the framework of research topics. The results of research and methodical work of laboratory, the experience of its employees in the development of international scientific contacts have become main advantages in assessing scientific work of scientists of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University by independent experts of the program “Cooperation in scientific and technical researches and education”(CSTRE), U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation. As a result, in 2009, in the project CR-08-05 at the Physical and Technical Faculty of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University and Laboratory of gamma-resonance spectroscopy with analysis of conversion electrons, gamma and X-rays the Scientific-Educational Center (SEC) of Energy Technologies was founded. Fundamental and applied research of functional materials for the sources and reservoirs of electrical energy became its main purpose.

In the framework of the Center scientific contacts of Laboratory were extended and the organization of cooperative ties with scientists and research groups of the USA, Canada, Australia, Spain, which work with using gamma -resonance spectroscopy methods. The practice of cooperation agreements and the exchange of scientific information develop in the framework of international programs INTAS, TACIS, CRDF, CORDIS using the results obtained in the laboratory; the organization of mutual internship of young scientists and students is expected.

Graduates of the specialty "Physics" can apply accumulated knowledge in fundamental and applied physics research, science and technology; Mathematical modeling of processes in natural, technical and biomedical systems; for the development of equipment and methods of the research of physical processes and phenomena; teaching physics and related subjects in educational establishments at any level of accreditation, schools, liceums, gimnasiums and universities; work in research institutes, research and design offices and laboratories; organization and management of research, the commercial materials science.
